Not every hydraulic circuit needs four ports. When a single service line must be switched on and off — a single-acting cylinder, a clamp, a pilot supply, an unloading branch — a three-way valve is the simpler and cheaper answer. The YXCHK 3WE6 delivers that at NG6 / ISO 4401-03, 31.5 MPa and 80 L/min, as a drop-in equivalent for the Rexroth 3WE6. The larger 3WE10 covers the same function at NG10 and 120 L/min.

Three-Way vs Four-Way — What the Digit Means

The leading digit in a valve designation counts working ports, not positions. A 4WE6 has four ports — P (pump), T (tank), A and B (two actuator lines) — which is what a double-acting cylinder needs to be driven in both directions. A 3WE6 has three: P, T and A. It switches one service line, and that is all.

This matters commercially as well as technically. Circuits that only need on/off control of a single line are frequently specified with a four-way valve because that is what the engineer had to hand — leaving the B port plugged. A three-way valve does the same job with a simpler spool. Where dozens of such circuits exist across a machine, that difference is worth designing for.

A Spool vs B Spool — Fail-Safe Behaviour

A three-way valve has only two spool types, and the choice between them is a safety decision, not a performance one. It determines what happens to the service line when control power is lost.

A worked case. On a workholding fixture, the question is what should happen if the machine loses power mid-cycle. If the part must stay clamped so it does not fall or shift, the B spool keeps pressure on the clamp line at rest. If the design instead requires that everything releases to a safe state, the A spool vents the line. Getting this backwards is a genuine safety issue, so confirm the intended failure mode before ordering rather than matching only the model number of the outgoing valve.

Where Three-Way Valves Are Used

  • Single-acting cylinders: where a spring or the load itself returns the cylinder, only the extend line needs powering. A four-way valve here leaves one port plugged and adds cost for nothing.
  • Clamping and workholding: hydraulic clamps that apply pressure on demand and release to tank. The B spool variant keeps clamps engaged if control power is lost.
  • Pilot supply switching: turning control pressure on and off to pilot-operated valves such as the 4WEH16 or DSHG-04 — a natural three-way duty.
  • Pump unloading branches: venting a relief valve's remote port to tank to unload the pump during idle, reducing heat and energy consumption.
  • Accumulator charge and dump: connecting or isolating an accumulator from the circuit, and safely dumping stored energy to tank at shutdown.

Replacing a Rexroth 3WE6 or 3WE10

Because the 3WE series follows the same ISO 4401 mounting standard as the four-way valves, replacement is straightforward when three things match: size (NG6 or NG10), spool type (A or B), and coil voltage (DC 24V or AC 220V). All YXCHK 3WE valves use the standard Z5L right-angle DIN 43650 connector, so the electrical side is a direct swap with no rewiring.

The one thing worth double-checking is spool type. Model codes are easy to transpose — 3WE6A60 and 3WE6B60 differ by a single character, but their failure behaviour is opposite. Read the letter from the nameplate rather than from a purchase record, and confirm it against the intended fail-safe state of the circuit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a 3WE6 and a 4WE6 valve?

The leading digit counts working ports. 4WE6 has P, T, A and B — for driving a double-acting cylinder both ways. 3WE6 has P, T and A only — it switches one service line on and off. Both share NG6 / ISO 4401-03 mounting, 31.5 MPa and 80 L/min, so they fit the same sub-plate but do different circuit jobs. Use 3WE6 for single-acting cylinders, clamping, pilot supply and on/off duty.

What is the difference between the A and B spool types on a 3WE6?

They differ in the de-energised state. A spool: P blocked, A vented to T at rest — pressurises when energised. B spool: P connected to A at rest — vents when energised. Choose A for fail-safe circuits where power loss must release pressure, B where pressure must be maintained if control power is lost.

Can a 3WE6 valve be fitted to a manifold designed for a 4WE6?

Physically yes — both use ISO 4401-03 / NG6, so bolt holes and mounting face match. Hydraulically it depends: a 3WE6 has no B port function, so any B service line will be uncontrolled.
